It all started with a notice in a Reservoir pub. Life Member and Hall of Fame Inductee Allan Mathews placed a flyer calling for players for the inaugural Reservoir Superules team, expecting it would generate interest for the locals. The early incarnation of the club known as Reservoir Districts Superules FC. By the end of the week, Mathews had received calls from about 20 perspective players who wanted to be part of the club’s first Superules campaign. The rest they say is history and on Sunday the 4th of April 1993, which was round 1, the club had a “bye” but played in practice match against a combined Sunbury, Geelong and Werribee team at Sunbury. And so, Coburg Superules began its journey as Reservoir District Superules, they won that day beating Sunbury by 8 points, 11.16-84 to 11.8-76. They were a few short early on but finished the game with a full complement when players eventually arrived at the ground. They did well, surprising themselves whilst enjoying the game. The club played their inaugural competition match at home in round 2 on Sunday the 18th of April at Crispe Park, Reservoir, a game which they won by 17-points against North Sunshine. The match was played before a very good crowd which made the atmosphere around the ground and in the rooms later tremendous. Reservoir kicked four goals in nil in the last quarter to seal the victory. Throughout the season Reservoir was always thereabouts knocking on the door of the final four. They went into the final round of the season (round 13) needing to win against North Heidelberg to secure a place in the finals in their debut season. Despite a five goal to one last quarter they weren’t able to reduce a large three quarter time deficit eventually going down by 22-points and missing out on the finals marginally on percentage.
