Lions Premiers 2009!

It was a classic setup, two teams from the Northern suburbs setup to battle each other for the Holy Grail. Yesterday's Premiership to the Lions was the culmination of two years of work, especially after last years bitter experience.
Although the Coburg Lions (Mustangs) and Northern have a fierce rivalry, they both hold much respect for each other.
With Spring well and truly in the air and a westerly breeze favouring the Buckley St end at St Bernards, it was Northern who won the first battle, by winning the toss but to coburg's surprise they chose to kick against the wind.
The first quarter was frantic as one would expect in a Grand Final, nervous kicks and anxious moments. The tentativeness soon settled and coburg were able to find some ascendancy by establishing a 2 goal lead at quarter time.
Northern came out firing in the second quarter booting 4 goals to coburg's 1 and managed to go in at halftime with a slender 2 point margin.
At halftime Gubby urged his team to give it all in the Premiership quarter and to feel confident that the last time these teams met, coburg dominated Northern in the second half and being this close meant that they could run over the top of Northern. Most importantly Northern knew that too and so the Premiership quarter got under way.
The Lions proved why they were the best team in 2009 in Division 2, slamming on 7 goals to two and with that they had one hand firmly clasped to the Premiership cup.
At three quarter time the Lions sensed that they were on the verge of Grand Final glory going into the last quarter with a 29 point lead. Northern floundered chances early to put scoreboard pressure missing easy shots and it was all too late as the Lions held their nerve kicking 3.2 to Northern's 1.6.
By the time the final siren squawked it was the Lions who reigned supreme in 2009. A wonderful team effort from all of those involved with the club and it culminated in the Premiership trophy being awarded to Gubby and Captain Alex "Damage" Talarico.
Zhan Usinov was awarded the best on ground, playing a superb and ''calm in the crisis" role throughout the game. A special mention to Mark Sedgwick who also worked tirelessly on the ball and up forward.
The Lions partied well and truly into the night at Kingsbury with countless renditions of the club song and drinking from the Premiership Cup.
Gubby summarised the year with a poetic Ode to Lions of 2009: (sung to the marching chant "I dont know what I've been told").
