How The Mighty Have Fallen

18/6/2017

Anyone who questioned the evenness of the competition in 2017 can just take a look at round 6. The once mighty Essendon sunk to bottom. Marcellin where bought back to earth with a thud by Williamstown. Beaconsfield and Plenty Valley pushed Parkdale and Frankston respectively all day. The competition for places in the four are wide open.

But let’s get back Coburg and what a great day for the club! Three wins across the three grades against Essendon, a FIRST. Reserve (Masters) grade defeat Essendon a FIRST. The Supers win by 48-points their highest winning margin against Essendon.

The Supers started well but gifted Essendon some opportunities to keep them in the game up until half-time. A 6-goal burst in the third quarter saw Coburg take a commanding lead into the last term. They dropped off in intensity but still managed to keep Essendon goalless and win by 48-points.

Ashley Flavel kicked 7-goals on debut and while Fabian Carelli won “the cans” in an excellent debut performance.

The Reserves kept their noses in front for the entire day but tapered off in the second half hanging on to win by 10-points. It wasn’t their best performance but it was enough to overcome Essendon, a determined effort but lacking consistency. That makes it four in a row for the Reserves and clear third on the ladder (equal second).

Speaking of determined the Over 50’s we’re victorious in a very tight contest against old rivals Essendon by 3-points. The 50’s led by 9-points at the last change and had to be brave as Essendon threw everything at Coburg even heading them deep into the last term but, in his first game back for some time Vin Taranto kicked the winning goal to snatch a great victory.

All match details and stats below.

In round 7 Coburg host Frankston at Piranha Park. For the Supers this is a vital match and a big opportunity to get into the four. For the Reserves it’s an opportunity to cement themselves in the four.
