A Message From Supers Coach Adam Bruni

G’day All,

It’s that time of year again, Pre-Xmas Training.

Training will commence on Thursday, 17 November 2016, 6.00pm sharp at McDonald Reserve, Coburg (Map Below).

It is a must that we all get down to training before Xmas as this will be used to establish a base for Pre-Season, and also give us a chance to get the balls moving around and to get the hands and feet ready for a big 2017.
We will be having 4 sessions prior to the Christmas break, so it’s not a big commitment, let's make the effort and take the next step in 2017.

With the Supers missing the finals by percentage and the Masters and Legends finishing the year off so well we are expecting big things next year, so get in early and be a part of the success.

All players are required to bring the below to every Pre-Xmas session:
  • Runners (No boots allowed on ground at this stage).
  • Suitable training attire (shorts/singlets, etc).
  • Towel
  • Swimming gear
  • Mouth Guard (if needed)
  • Water Bottle (although the Club should have some available)
  • Sunscreen (just in case)
If you are unable to attend, please let me know on 0401 847 700. See you all there.

Committee Expanded, Co-Presidents Appointed

21/10/2016

Constitutional change has seen the 2016 Committee installed in an expanded model at the Club's Annual General Meeting on Wednesday evening.

There were good numbers in attendance and there a very positive mood after the Annual Report was delivered which demonstrated to consecutive years of financial growth, improved onfield success and member engagement. CLICK HERE to view the 24th Annual Report.

The constitutional amendment led by Paul Turner enabled the Club an optional Co-President situation and further defined some of the roles on the Committee for clarity.

Both Salina Hick (Treasurer) and Nick Duryea (General Member) both made the decision not to re-stand for election. The significant contribution from both these individuals was acknowledged at the meeting.

The Executive Committee was formed as follows:

Co-President: Carlo Federico

Vice-President: Paul Turner
Treasurer: Frank Massara

The General Committee was formed as follows:

Football Manager: Craig McKay
Social Convener: TBA, Vacant
General Members: Vince Simeone
Theo Grimaldi
Sera Marinelli
Luca Pozzobon

Co-President: Tony Lombardi
Secretary: Pete Cummins

Sponsorship Manager: TBA, Vacant

Property Manager: Dave Pengelly
Ron Torcasio
Paul Pitman
Cedar Ferri
All in all it was a fantastic result for the club that will enable the vision to be driven forward with weight of numbers behind it.

As can be seen Paul Turner moved into the advisory and supporting role of Vice-President (which was vacated by Dave Pengelly) to the Co-Presidents Carlo Federico and Tony Lombardi. Frank Massara stepped up into the Treasurer's role vacated by Salina Hick.

Craig McKay moved into the official Football Manager role and Dave Pengelly moved in the Property Manager role.

Three new General Members Serafino Marinelli, Luca Pozzobon and Cedar Ferri joined while club stalwart Paul Pitman returned for other stint and will likely be the League Liaison officer.

While Queensland teams dominated the 2016 AFL Masters Carnival held on the Gold Coast from 2-8 October, there were two individuals representing Coburg Superules who were capped as All Australians, Ray Ransome (Over 60s) and Mark Gillman (Over 35s/40s).

Both joined this elite group when they were named at the official post-carnival presentation held at Sea World. It was a second cap for Ray Ransome who was also named in the Over 55s All Australian team in 2013. To see the honour roll for All Australians who have represented our Club,

Serafino Marinelli and Ben Matricardi also enjoyed team success with Vic Metro taking out the Over 50s Division 2 group.

Paul Pitman and Ray Ransome featured in the Over 50s Division 1 and Over 60s groups respectively who both finished runners up in their group.

Craig McKay, Paul Turner and Mark Gillman played in the highly competitive Over 35/40s Division 1 group and despite finishing third had some excellent highlights including an 8-goal victory over Tasmania in the last round.

Although not represented by Coburg Superules players, Vic Metro also won the Over 45's Division 2.

For the first time ever there were Masters Womens teams competing at the carnival which is very much in line with the AFL's vision on developing womens football.

There was an unofficial announcement that next seasons carnival will be held in the Geelong. Further information will follow as it becomes available.

Well done and congratulations to all those who represented Coburg Superules Football Club at the carnival and in particular to Razor and Gilly.

Gillman Takes Out The Best and Fairest

17/9/2016

Picture
On a special night where two greats of Club Steve Moss and Phil Crapper were inducted into the Hall of Fame, it was Mark Gillman who won the Supers Best and Fairest by a single vote in the tight finish at Abruzzo Club on Saturday night.

Michael Egan jumped out of the box early and led up until round 5 before tapering off. A four way battle between Mark Gillman, Kane O'Brien, Peter Poelsman and a fast finishing Jason Dean then ensued and had the audience on the edge of its seat. Ultimately it was Gillman who took out the coveted award.

Richard Price led the count from round 2 onwards, polling 61 votes to take out the Reserves Best & Fairest, while popular clubman Ange Chiodo, who was considered favourite, won the Over 50s Best & Fairest by 29 votes. Ange Chiodo has now won the Best & Fairest in all three grades.

As expected Nick Duryea won the Best Clubman award while Ron Torcasio and Frank Massara became Life Members.

There was a reunion of sorts with considerable number of Life Members (and past members) present and we suitably entertained with music from "Who Said What" once the formal part of the evening was complete.

Coburg Win The Inaugural Foundation Cup

14/8/2016

Picture
Coburg Supers have taken out the inaugural "Love Me, Love You" Cup by 3-points in a thrilling contest against finals bound Ascot Vale.

Ascot Vale threw everything but the kitchen sink at Coburg however, the Lions stood tall with a big last quarter where they wrestled back the lead and locked down a tiring Ascot Vale inside their 50 metre arc to run out winners.

What could have been? Coburg kicked 5.17, had they kicked straighter they might have found themselves finishing up in fourth position and on their way to their first finals series in seven years. In the end it was just a great win and a great way to cap off a dramatically improved season.

The Reserves crushed Ascot Vale by 88-points to farewell Jamie Arnold in his final game as Coach. They dominated for large periods of the match and never gave Ascot Vale a sniff.

A sweep of victories would have been nice but unfortunately the Legends couldn't cap off the season with a victory going down by 67-points.

The Club wishes to advise that Superules veteran and Club stalwart Rohan Preston has announced his retirement from football.

After succumbing to injury Rohan has decided to call it quits on his playing days after 13 years of football at Coburg. He was unable to get up for a farewell game which would have been fitting for a man of his stature.

Rohan, who is a real character and is known for his quick wit joined in 2002, became a Life Member in 2013, and played 85 games for the Club. He coached Reserves between 2012-2014, was Assistant Coach in the 2009 grand final winning team, and was named Assistant Coach in the Team of Decade 2002-2012.

All is not lost though, Rohan whilst not able to compete on the field will still be around as a member of the Club , supporting and participating a social member. When you see him around say “thanks” on a wonderful contribution to our Club on the field.

Great Fundraising Effort For Brave Lorenzo

16/6/2015

The All of Club Players Day held on Sunday was a great event despite numbers being a little down, the BBQ was in full swing and the beers were flowing.

During this event we ran a number of fundraising initiatives to raise funds for brave young 9-year Old, Lorenzo Santalucia who has been diagnosed with Ewings-Sarcoma a rare form of bone cancer.

Lorenzo is the nephew of one of our sponsors Electech and was present on Sunday for the fundraiser. He's a great kid, full of energy and happiness.

Once again member dug deep and thanks to their generosity we raised $813 which we hope will go some way to helping him overcome his illness. The club also presented him with a Geelong Football Club jumper signed by the Geelong team. Obviously Lorenzo is a big fan of the Cats!

Thanks to everyone who contributed on the day. In particular Berra Meats for supplying the meat and the meat trays for the raffle and Werribee Football Club who got behind the initiative and also supplied a meat tray. Chris Spencer, Brett Gardener, Gary Gardener and Ang Chiodo who all helped out on the BBQ during the day.

Legends Make It 4 From 4, Reserves Go Down

14/6/2015

It was beaut day for footy and the Legends made it four wins on the trot with gutsy win over cross town rivals Essendon.

In a tight, seesawing affair the Legends held Essendon goalless in the third term and made the most of their opportunities to sneak home by 3-points.

There were many tired bodies post game but they sang the song with gusto and it was a well-deserved victory.

Just reward for the effort and hard work the Over 50s have been putting in throughout the season. They are a united unit that appear ready to take a big scalp and none would be better that top place team Beaconsfield in two weeks. This win puts the Legends into outright third place on the ladder.

Playing against strengthen Werribee outfit the Reserves kicked 4-goals straight to hold a 3-point lead at quarter time, but a number of turnovers in the second and third terms meant they could not maintain the lead throughout the afternoon.

Despite being down by 17-points at ¾ time the Reserves had their chances to snatch a win however some wayward kicking in the last term ultimately cost them the 4 points.

Winning Streak Continues For Legends

4/6/2015

Theo Grimaldi celebrated his 100th game in the best way possible as the Legends ran out big winners by 43-points over Ascot Vale.

It was a great turnaround considering their last quarter fade out against Ascot Vale in round 2. That's 4 out of 5 for Coburg and 4-points clear in third place.

The defence was brilliant keeping Ascot Vale goalless for the entire match and the effort was capped off with a 5-goal last quarter which also included a “supergoal” from Rodney Craig.

Theo Grimaldi ran through the banner accompanied by his daughters and joined in the on-field party with a goal of his own in the second quarter. It was fitting performance both honouring the “T” and the Ladies Days fundraiser.

Despite wayward kicking in front of goal the Reserves had crushing 60-point victory ending a mini drought that had dogged them in the last three rounds.

There was plenty to like about the win, energy, effort and positivity were the order of the day with only blight being inaccuracy that resulted in 21 behinds being kicked on day. Coburg murdered Ascot Vale in the centre clearances and if they had their kicking boots on the victory might have been much greater.

Jason Baker and Marco Rabar landed 3 goals apiece in the top notch effort.

Disappointingly the Supers once again failed to fire a shot after half-time going down 41-points in an insipid performance that left everyone at the ground wondering why Coburg are unable to put teams to the sword when they get themselves in a good position to do so.

It’s twice in as many matches that the Coburg have gone scoreless in the third term allowing their opponents a sniff. At times it was an selfish and undisciplined performance marred by a lack of desire, urgency and the appetite for the contest. Seemingly Coburg have forgotten how to win.

The coaching staff know the team have the personnel and capability, we’ve witnessed the effort in patches, the players now just need to find the necessary spark to get the season back on track.
